A Friendly Reminder
The new Bx46 bus route launches next month, along with several Bronx bus scheduling adjustments (most of which result in service increases); see my earlier post on this matter for more info.
Happy riding!

Improvements to Bronx Bus Services Coming Soon! (Plus a note on Kingsbridge Rd IND)
[UPDATE (02.08.2013): Added a link to a new MTA document giving more details on upcoming bus service enhancements.]
MTA New York City Transit’s latest Committee Meeting Report includes several notes on Bronx bus routes and the Kingsbridge Road IND ADA project. Starting in April, some Bronx bus routes will see service increases; additionally, the MTA will introduce a new Bronx bus route. Also, MTA proposes major changes to the Bx15, Bx41, and Bx55 to take place this summer.
Concourse Line Survives Sandy’s Wrath; Limited Subway Service Resumes Tomorrow
The MTA recently announced some subway service restorations for tomorrow; they also released a map of said restorations. The short version: service between The Bronx and Midtown Manhattan is (mostly) back – and mostly local (guess that means my Concourse Line survived – if I see anything interesting, I might just snap a pic or two or twenty and append them to this post); except for (F) and (N) trains, most Brooklyn and Queens subway routes will not traverse Manhattan due to flooding and power outages south of 34th Street in Manhattan. To connect the Brooklyn/Queens “stub” routes to Manhattan, the MTA will run bus shuttles between these lines and Midtown (and Downtown) Manhattan via the East Side.
Lest it be lost in the midst of Sandy coverage, MTA employees deserve a big thumbs up for restoring what they can given the damage Sandy caused. As they did on 9.11, the employees worked (and continue working) tirelessly to get the City That Never Sleeps back on its feet – kudos to you guys.
That said, expect crowded buses and subways, and longer trips and waits. Incidentally, yours truly returns to work tomorrow, so I’ll get to experience these “joys” for myself!
EDIT: As per MTA’s official Twitter, subways, buses, Metro-North, and LIRR are free through Friday!

Sandy
Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc in NYC, downing trees and power lines, destroying a long-standing local restaurant, and even parts of buildings! It also damaged subway and vehicular tunnels by way of corrosive salt water flooding (as an extreme example, the South Ferry station on the (1) line is COMPLETELY underwater)!
In spite of this, MTA diligently restored some bus service citywide, with more restorations coming tomorrow. The subways, however, are out indefinitely!
For those of you on Twitter, you can follow MTA’s official Twitter page @MTAInsider for the latest transit-related updates; you can also visit their Web site.
If I’m able, I might venture out and snap some pix within the next few days – though I make no guarantees. The important thing is for my borough and city to continue its road to recovery – and for all of us to stand together as we do so. Stay safe and may God bless you all.

UPDATE: Bx1/Bx2 Bus Service – Summer Service Reductions
[UPDATE (08.30.2012): The Bx1/Bx2 service reductions effective July 1, 2012 weren't a "stealthy service cut;" it turns out that MTA typically reduces some service systemwide during the summer due to lower-than-average ridership during summer months. Regular service resumes in September.]
A few months ago, MTA released a report detailing proposed changes to bus service for the summer (specifically p. 111-114 of the document). Schedules for 21 routes would see adjustment, but a look at current MTA bus schedules shows adjustments to several other routes – including more cuts to the Bx1 and Bx2 in what looks like a seasonal adjustment.
BREAKING: Weekend Bx34 bus service to be restored; other service improvements planned
In a huge departure from the “doomsday” cuts of June 2010, the MTA announced a $29 million service improvement package set for implementation over the next year.
